Hot Stone Therapy

Almost everyone at some point will have heard of hot stone therapy but many actually know what the treatment encounters and can be put off by the unknown. The treatment will start with the traditional Swedish massage to warm the muscles up ready for the stones. They are flat, heated basalt stones, Typically from river beds, basalt stones are used for massage as they have a rich iron content that retains heat. The stones warm and relax your muscles, allowing deeper pressure to be applied during your massage. The practice of stone therapy or stone massage was present in many cultures around the world. The type of stone therapy that is now most prevalent in Western massage treatments is most likely derived from China. There are historical accounts confirming that the Chinese used heated stones more than 2,000 years ago as a means of improving the function of internal organs. Similarly there are records of stones used in folklore and religious ceremonies, with the intention to heal ailments in regions as diverse as the Americas, Africa, Europe, Egypt and India. As well as practices resembling modern stone massage, which involved laying stones at specific points on the body, there were other applications of stone, including the wearing of stones as ornaments which ensured health and protection.

There are many other added benefits to having hot stone therapy....

Provides relief from pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other chronic conditions, Decreases pain and muscle spasms, Reduces chronic stress and tension, Increases flexibility in joints, aiding in easier mobility and movement, Relieves pain and tension created by strained and contracted muscles Any heat placed onto muscles helps relax them down much quicker than a treatment without the heat, I always recommend to have hot stones if you suffer with bad stubborn tension. Some muscles can be so tight even by the end of massage time they may not have relaxed down enough to properly work the tension out. If this is the case hot stones will work miracles for you.
